dining hallTamarack Camps was the most successful of several Jewish camps in a recent fundraising challenge.

The challenge, sponsored by the Grinspoon Institute for Jewish Philanthropy, provides matching grant dollars to enhance Camp Maas, Tamarack's overnight camp in Ortonville.

"This is a very exciting and important time for Jewish camping in this country," said Jonah Geller, Tamarack's executive director. "A Jewish camping experience significantly impacts a child's Jewish identity and sense of community. To be recognized for our effectiveness by a major national philanthropic institution is a great honor:"

Thirteen Jewish camps in North America were chosen last spring by the institute, founded by Harold Grinspoon, a Massachusetts-based philanthropist, and were challenged to raise money in a four-month span, September to December. Tamarack Camps raised the most, roughly $700,000. The institute, in turn, guaranteed Tamarack $200,000.

Construction is under way at Camp Maas to complete the interior of its dining hall, renovate two floor-hockey rinks and build a new horse barn. The projects will be completed prior to this summer's season. Future plans and fundraising goals include other capital improvements, including the renovation of the Butzel Conference Center. which houses year-round family camping programs and corporate retreats.

Tamarack President Brian Kepes views the Grinspoon partnership as an important first step in the direction of regional and national philanthropic partnerships. "We're grateful for this opportunity to continue to enhance our facilities," he said.

Tamarack was also selected by the institute as one of seven camps in a pilot program to engage the community to help secure the camps' financial futures.

In addition, the Tamarack-Grinspoon partnership provides mentor services to guide the agency in board development, strategic planning and fund raising. Tamarack's strategic plan calls for fundraising for programming, capital improvements and financial assistance to families in need.
